Sebastian Tellier Five City US Tour December 2008!!!

Sebastien Tellier–La Ritournelle (video):
Such a great song, and was featured in the soundtrack for the movie Lost in Translation (no, that was the song Fantino–but someone had better put La Ritournelle in a movie, it’s so epic)–and according to Wikipedia, “The most prominent song on Politics was “La Ritournelle”, a string-led tune, which featured Nigerian drummer, Tony Allen, drummer and musical director of Fela Kuti’s band Africa 70 from 1968 to 1979.” Wow! Fela Kuti/Afric 70 funk/soul/jazz/Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen and Sebastien Tellier! No wonder the drums sound so epic on this song…

Almost made the list for the novelty/strangeness factor: Golden Earring — N.E.W.S. It’s really good…if you’re into that kind of thing–a hard rock new wave hybrid kind of thing. Sounds like it could be on a parallel universe Nine Inch Nails Pretty Hate Machine or a poppier D.A.F. album or something. Nice drums especially and synth bassline, scratchy guitar. Could only have come out of the 1980s.

Mushrumps: Love at first listen

Mushrumps is hands down the best mp3 blog for my tastes I have ever encountered. Mr. Mushrumps has impeccable taste and musical curatorship. I’ve literally doubled my amount of good music just by listening to Mushrumps. Found out about Mushrumps after he was a guest DJ on the venerable Bumrocks, which also rocks. I too love Tres Hombres (especially for The Sheik, which sounds fantastic on vinyl and less so on CD, true story). Listening to all the great Mushrumps music, it’s like when I first discovered some Magma, Space, Flying Lizards, Gentle Giant, Captain Beefheart, Brian Bennett, King Crimson, Joni Mitchell, etc. That great feeling of finding some nice music you’ve never heard the likes of before but wish you had. Runs the gamut from psychadelic, folk, prog, metal, soul, etc. Lots of pleasant analog synth action. Thanks Mushrumps!!!

P.S.

Here’s a pretty cool cover of ZZ Top’s Sheik by some band “Uncle Sugar”!
